About Mutual Funds

A mutual fund is an investment company that takes in money from investors and pools it together and invests in a group of assets, in accordance with a stated set of objectives. The common stated objectives include investing in :

  • Value Companies vs. Growth companies
  • Large Cap. vs. Mid Cap. vs. Small Cap.
  • Bonds

As a participant in your company 401k, your contributions can be invested in a variety of mutual funds. The mutual fund manager then takes your contributions and purchases stock and bonds on your behalf, and you receive an equity position in the fund and, in effect, in each of its underlying securities. The benefit of mutual funds includes diversification and professional money management. You have the option to transfer money from one fund to another at your discretion.
